The portrait is rich in symbolism, depicting Donald Trump with a bloodied face and raised fist shortly after a failed assassination attempt against him in July 2024. This striking artwork was presented to the American president by Vladimir Putin.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s envoy, was the first to bring the existence of the portrait to light in an interview with Tucker Carlson, although the image had yet to be made public.

Now, the creator of the painting – one of Russia’s most renowned artists, Nikas Safronov – is unveiling the content and backstory of the piece to CNN. He indicated that he requested no payment for the work, viewing it as a “contribution to the rapprochement between the two countries.” In fact, he claims that Putin later reached out to him, stating that this gesture was an “important step towards improving Russian-American relations.”

In the portrait, Trump is depicted at his campaign podium during a speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, just after the attack. The artist explains that he chose to showcase “the blood, the scar, and the courage” of Trump, adding, “I wanted to show how he did not back down or show fear, but raised his fist, symbolizing that he stands united with America.”

According to Safronov, the work was commissioned following a visit from “people who did not immediately reveal their identities,” but he suspected it to be a directive from the Kremlin. He is known for painting portraits of global leaders, ranging from Pope Francis to Kim Jong-un.

The portrait gifted to Trump resembles another painting by the same artist, which now adorns the Grand Foyer of the White House after the removal of Barack Obama’s official portrait. The dramatic depiction of Trump, with blood and a raised fist, has become a symbol of “strength” for his 2024 election campaign. The Kremlin has yet to officially comment on the matter.
