Commission: If Russia wants a ceasefire, it should do it immediately and not wait until 8 May

"We continue to support Ukraine in achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace," said European Commission spokeswoman Anita Giber

Newsroom April 29 08:00

If Russia really wants a ceasefire, it does not have to wait until May 8 but can stop the attacks immediately, Anita Giber, a spokeswoman for the European Commission, Anita Giber, said during a briefing for reporters.

“Our position is very clear. Russia can stop the killing and bombing at any time, there is no need to wait until May 8 – it can do it today,” Gipper said.“Russia has a reputation as an aggressor. That’s why we have to watch and judge its actions. At the same time, Ukraine has accepted an unconditional ceasefire for over a month now. For our part, we continue to support Ukraine in achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace, he added.

Responding to questions about the US administration’s statements about a possible withdrawal from the peace talks process, the Commission spokeswoman noted that support for Ukraine would remain a priority for Europe, although she stressed that the European stance is strongest when backed by allies.

“We are always stronger together with our allies. Our absolute priority must be to support Ukraine, as this sends the right message to all potential aggressors, not just Russia. We aim to strengthen Ukraine’s position. That is why we continue to increase military assistance – member states have committed €23 billion this year.” Gipper said.“The stronger Ukraine is on the battlefield, the stronger it will be at the negotiating table.”

Recall that Vladimir Putin announced a unilateral “ceasefire” for May 8-10. However, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stressed that there is no need to wait until May 8 to implement a ceasefire, as it can begin immediately.
