The spaces she inhabited resembled living galleries, and her aesthetic continues to inspire art lovers around the world.

In both her personal life and career, Ertegun was a boundless creative force who helped shape contemporary aesthetics. Her art choices left an indelible mark. A recent Christie’s auction in New York dedicated to her remarkable life and legacy — titled “Mica: The Collection of Mica Ertegun” — spotlighted the treasures that adorned her spectacular residences across the globe. The result was a global collector frenzy. The auction became a landmark event, with her collection achieving sales of $183.9 million, marking a resounding success.

Among the highlights were masterpieces by David Hockney, Joan Miró, and Ed Ruscha. The crown jewel of the night was René Magritte’s iconic painting “L’Empire des Lumières”, which sold for $121.1 million, setting a new world record for the artist. Ertegun had acquired the painting in 1968, displaying an unmatched eye for both aesthetic and investment value. The haunting juxtaposition of day and night in the painting continues to captivate audiences. That same night, Hockney’s “Still Life on a Glass Table” (1971) sold for $19 million, while “Three Chairs with a Section of a Picasso Mural” (1970) fetched over $9 million.

Ertegun’s collection was not limited to modern masterpieces — it also featured sophisticated furniture and decorative objects that reflected her passion for harmonizing different periods and styles. From her Parisian apartment to her legendary New York residence and her villa in Bodrum, every home she created was a living, breathing gallery meant to be shared with her discerning social circle. True to her lifelong commitment to philanthropy, proceeds from the auction were donated to humanitarian causes, preserving Ertegun’s legacy of generosity.

A Life of Elegance and Influence

Born in Romania in 1926, Mica Ertegun quickly rose to prominence as a symbol of style, sophistication, and cultural insight. As the wife of Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic Records, she moved in elite circles where art, music, and culture intersected dynamically. In the 1960s, Vogue described the couple as “comets in New York’s sky, moving in their own orbit and leaving behind trails of brilliance,” a phrase that captured both their charisma and the exquisite taste that defined their homes.

She once said, “I can’t live with the same paintings all the time,” explaining her ever-evolving collection. Her eclectic taste led her to seek pieces that carried historical and emotional resonance — art that imbued her interiors with meaning.

A standout from her collection, Joan Miró’s “Peinture (Amour)” (1925), sold for €4 million, further underscoring the timeless value of her acquisitions.

Interior Designer and Tastemaker

Ertegun’s career in interior design was equally illustrious. Each project she touched bore her signature harmony and elegance. In 2017, she was inducted into the AD100 Hall of Fame by Architectural Digest, a prestigious honor in the world of design.

Her fashion sense was also widely celebrated. As early as 1971, she appeared among the “Best Dressed Women in the World,” and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York even holds a collection of her dresses.

A passionate philanthropist, Ertegun donated $41 million to establish the Humanities Scholarship Program at Oxford University, the largest gift of its kind in Oxford’s 900-year history. In 2017, Queen Elizabeth II recognized her contributions to philanthropy, education, and UK-US cultural relations by naming her a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

An Artistic Legacy

The artworks and objects she curated throughout her life reflect her spirit — a mirror of her love for beauty, creativity, and timeless design. From Miró’s abstract forms to Magritte’s surreal dreamscapes, each piece testified to her refined sensibility.

In 1978, famed photographer Horst captured her in her art-filled Manhattan home for a Vogue feature dedicated to the surreal. At the time, she was so immersed in collecting that she left her bedroom walls mostly bare. “I’ve left the walls empty, except for an 18th-century Chinese leather screen,” she said. “It’s classic — and besides, I can’t see it from the bed.” Even the 20th-century Japanese blue-and-white porcelain vases that flanked her bed later found their way into the recent Christie’s auction.
