A raft of changes are planned in the new draft law on the Traffic Code that was tabled in Parliament on Saturday morning.

The draft law provides for the criminalisation of a number of high-risk offences, including driving using a mobile phone, failing to give way to a railway vehicle, violating the red or mobile barrier before a level railway crossing as well as parking at it, driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a driving licence.

At the same time, the driver of a two-wheeler is responsible for ensuring that his or her passengers wear helmets, for whom fines are also provided. There are also plans to reduce speed limits in residential areas, while taxis are kept out of bus lanes.
