More than 4 million tourists visited our country in the four months of January – April – What the BoE data show

The increased tourist traffic resulted in a 10.6% increase in tourism receipts compared to the corresponding period of 2024, reaching 2.1 billion euros

More than 4.1 million tourists visited the country in the January-April quarter, recording an increase of 5.8% compared to the same period in 2024. Tourist traffic from the US was up by about 27%.

According to data from the Bank of Greece, travel through airports increased by 10.8%, while that through road border stations decreased by 3.9%. In the period under review, travel from EU-27 countries amounted to 2.04 million travellers, a decrease of 5.4% compared to the same period in 2024, while travel from other countries increased by 19.7% to 2 million travellers. Travel from euro area countries increased by 3.2%, while travel from EU-27 countries outside the euro area decreased by 27.9%.

In particular, travel from Germany rose by 3.6% to 475.5 thousand travellers, while that from France fell by 22.6% to 164.6 thousand travellers. Travel from Italy also fell by 11.0% to 198.3 thousand travellers. About non-EU-27 countries, travel from the United Kingdom increased by 41.5% to 294.6 thousand travellers, while travel from the United States increased by 26.9% to 339.5 thousand travellers. Finally, travel traffic from Russia increased to 2.8 thousand travellers.

The increased tourist traffic resulted in tourism receipts showing an increase of 10.6% compared to the same period in 2024, reaching 2.1 billion euros. This development is mainly due to the 26.0% increase in receipts from residents of other countries, which reached 1 billion euros, as receipts from residents of EU-27 countries decreased by 1.8% to 1.025 billion euros. More specifically, receipts from residents of euro area countries amounted to 861.5 million euro, down by 5.7%, while receipts from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro area increased by 25.4% to 164.1 million euro.

In particular, receipts from Germany increased by 0.8% to €297.1 million, while receipts from France decreased by 25.0% to €110.2 million. Receipts from Italy also fell by 6.6% to €110.3 million. Among the other countries, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 23.4% to €167.8 million, while receipts from the United States increased by 36.8% to €325.5 million. Finally, receipts from Russia increased to €2.5 million.
