The weather will be rainy today in the northern and mountainous continental areas, while strong thunderstorms are expected in central Macedonia from time to time until the afternoon. On the contrary, sunshine with a few clouds will prevail in the rest of Greece, local moderate winds in the sea, while the temperature will drop slightly in the west and north.
From tomorrow, according to Theodore Kolydas, the melting weather will also return. As the Star meteorologist says in a post, “after a short period of weakened winds, the well-known to all of us, the melemi returns to the Aegean Sea from Wednesday afternoon, offering relief from the heat and favorable conditions for most coastal areas of the country. According to the latest forecast data, winds will initially increase to 6 to 7 Beaufort in the central and southern Aegean Sea from Wednesday afternoon. The peak is expected from Thursday to Sunday, where in some places – mainly in areas such as the Cyclades, Karpathos and the southeastern Aegean – the gusts of the wind will reach 7 to 8 Beaufort“.
However, Kolydas says that despite the strengthening winds, the impact on shipping and tourist travel is not expected to be significant. “During the night, the winds will decrease by 1 to 2 Beaufort, which reduces the waves and creates better conditions for coastal connections and sea travel.”
At the same time, it notes that “in addition to its well-known influence on the seas, the meltemi also has a positive effect on temperatures, limiting the intense heat, especially in the eastern mainland and island parts of the country. As it is not accompanied by storms or unstable weather conditions, it is characterised as a stable, cool and – ultimately – beneficial phenomenon for the days to come. Travellers are advised to keep an eye on updates from the port authorities and shipping companies, however, at present, no serious disruption to sea transport is on the horizon. This year’s summer melem seems to be returning with stability but without extremes, offering natural coolness and helping to maintain a milder temperature situation in eastern and southern Greece.”
Tsatrafillias: “First a shot of dew, then prolonged heat…”
“Extended heat” is predicted for the days leading up to August 15 by meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafillias, as well as local thunderstorms in the coming hours.
Specifically, as he says in a post, the days ahead will pass without “weather extremes“, with the exception of northern Greece, where strong thunderstorms are expected in the next 24 hours.
“From Thursday and for several days the mercury will be 3-5 degrees above normal levels keeping the heat bearable. The weather will be warmer in western Greece with a temperature ceiling of 36-37 degrees. Also the winds from Thursday will pick up (6-7 Beaufort) until the end of the week, “notes in the same post Mr. Tsatrafillias.
Regarding the possibility of a new heat wave “visiting” the country, the meteorologist said: “Regarding the question of whether another heatwave will come, the answer cannot be one-word answer. However, although the chances are decreasing, I will not hide from you that I see warm air masses approaching us after the 15th of the month and need to be monitored.”
