The state apparatus is on alert for the severe weather, which is expected to bring strong storms accompanied by hail. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection (GSCP) has informed all competent government services, as well as regional and municipal authorities, to be on heightened readiness in order to respond immediately to the impacts of these phenomena.

At the same time, the GSCP urges citizens to be especially cautious and to take self-protection measures against risks arising from severe weather events.

Severe Weather: Recommendations from the General Secretariat for Civil Protection to citizens
In particular, in areas where heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, or gale-force winds are expected:

  • Secure any objects that may be swept away by the severe weather and cause damage or injury.
  • Ensure that gutters and downpipes in homes are not blocked and are functioning properly.
  • Avoid crossing torrents or streams, on foot or by vehicle, during storms and rainfall, and for several hours after they end. Pay special attention to road sections where the road intersects with streams and no bridge exists.
  • Avoid outdoor work and activities in marine and coastal areas during severe weather events (risk of lightning strikes).
  • Take immediate shelter during a hailstorm. Seek refuge in a building or vehicle and do not leave the safe area until you are certain the storm has passed. Hail can also be very dangerous for animals.
  • Avoid passing under large trees, hanging signs, and generally in areas where lightweight objects (e.g. flowerpots, broken glass, etc.) may detach and fall (e.g. from balconies).
  • Strictly follow the instructions of local authorities such as the Traffic Police.
