Encouraging results from action against child obesity: 80% of children have an improved body mass index

Of the children who participate, 80% have lost fat and not just pounds, according to Irini Agapidaki

Newsroom November 28 09:04

The progress of the National Action Against Pediatric Obesity is encouraging, with figures showing that around 1,000 children and families have already participated in the programme. 70% of the children enrolled are aged 5-12 years old.

The number of children and adolescents in the five-year age group is about 5% of the total number of children and adolescents in the five-year age group.

Indeed, based on the measurements, it is particularly noteworthy that 80% of the children show improved Body Mass Index, losing mainly fat, not just pounds, while improving clinical indicators associated with elevated cholesterol or hypertension, said Deputy Minister of Health Eirini Agapidaki.

As Mrs Agapidaki pointed out, today our country records one of the highest rates of childhood obesity in the European Union, with about 40% of children showing overweight or obesity. For this reason, he stressed, now, based on scientific direction, a process of balanced nutrition for children has been chosen.

Referring to the nutritional teleconsultation, the Deputy Minister of Health noted that the service operates nationwide, facilitating
access for families in remote areas.

Mrs Agapidaki reiterated her call to parents to trust the initiative and join the free program, noting that this action essentially supports families.
