One of the harshest punishments ever carried out in Indonesia under Sharia law was imposed on an unmarried couple, who were punished with 140 lashes in a sentence publicly executed in a park on Thursday in the province of Aceh.

The couple was charged and convicted of having sexual relations outside marriage and consuming alcohol—both prohibited in this province, which is the only one in Indonesia where Sharia law is applied.

In total, the couple received 140 lashes: 100 for sex outside marriage and 40 for alcohol consumption, according to the head of the Banda Aceh Sharia police, Mohammad Rizal. The woman was unable to endure the pain, fainted, and was removed by ambulance.

In the photos released to the public, the woman can be seen kneeling as she receives the lashes from a masked man, while in one of the frames her tears are clearly visible.

Her partner, for his part, clenched his teeth in an effort to withstand the pain of the blows.

According to the French news agency, the couple was among six people who were flogged for violating the Islamic code, including a Sharia police officer and his partner, who were arrested nearby in a private space. That couple received 23 lashes each.
