Tragedy in Crans-Montana: Switzerland to pay $64,000 for each victim

According to the official announcement, the amount will be paid for every person who lost their life, as well as for each injured person who required hospitalization

Newsroom February 25 06:30

The Swiss government announced on Wednesday (25/2) that it will provide a one-off payment of $64,000 to the seriously injured and to the families of the victims of the deadly fire that broke out on New Year’s Day at a bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana, leaving 41 dead and more than 100 injured.

As clarified by the Federal Council of Switzerland, the so-called “solidarity contribution” aims to offer immediate financial support to those affected and to serve as a gesture of state solidarity. According to the official statement, the amount will be paid for each person who lost their life, as well as for each injured individual who required hospitalization.

According to witness accounts and the initial findings of the prosecutorial investigation, the fire is believed to have been caused by the use of fireworks that ignited the foam soundproofing material on the ceiling of the bar’s basement. Swiss authorities reported that a total of 115 people were injured. Most of the victims were teenagers, and several were foreign nationals, including citizens from France and Italy.
