The Greek Education Ministry has ordered an administrative inquiry following the death of Sofia Christidou, a public school teacher in Thessaloniki, who reportedly suffered months of bullying by students before her fatal stroke on Saturday.
According to a report by protothema.gr, Christidou had formally requested police presence and X-ray security measures at her school in February, submitting a detailed three-page petition to the Ministry of Education, the Directorate of Secondary Education of Thessaloniki, and Central Macedonia.
In her report, Christidou documented specific incidents of bullying, including dates and times. She described an incident in early February where a student threw an open bottle of chocolate milk at her, soaking her clothes. “Throughout the class, she threw papers at me and finally a bottle of water, which spilled on the floor, soaking both me and the classroom,” Christidou wrote.
She also recounted other dangerous incidents, such as having a full water bottle and a heavy book thrown at her back while writing on the blackboard—actions that could have caused serious injury, especially given her pre-existing sacrum fracture.
Christidou further detailed verbal abuse, aggressive behavior, and threats to her physical safety from a group of students. “These incidents are the final straw,” she wrote. “Any attempt to communicate with these students is impossible. Their behavior is extremely aggressive, with the clear intent to force me out of the school, even telling me directly, ‘Why don’t you leave here?’”
In her petition, Christidou called for enhanced security measures, including the presence of police officers during school hours, the installation of body scanners and X-ray systems, and the constant availability of a school psychologist to prevent and manage such incidents.
She concluded by emphasizing that the situation “seriously offends my personal dignity and, in some cases, endangers my physical safety,” urging immediate intervention to address the “extremely unpleasant, worrying, and ultimately dangerous” conditions.
