A new seismic tremor occurred on Friday morning off the coast of Crete.
According to the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5 on the Richter scale and occurred 18 kilometers south of Goudouras in Lasithi, while its focal depth was located at 7.7 kilometers.
Early Friday morning, the island was shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, which occurred in the same area.
The Deputy Regional Governor of Lasithi, Giannis Androulakis, told ERT that the earthquake had a noticeable duration and was strongly felt across the island.
“The earthquake lasted and was felt throughout southwestern Crete; I have reports from Sitia to Heraklion. We are awaiting developments regarding any potential issues, and civil protection services are on alert.”
The president of OASP, Efthymios Lekkas, also spoke to ERT about the earthquake.
As he stated: “We have an earthquake south of Lasithi. The initial magnitude is 5.5 in the marine area at a depth of 5 kilometers. We have not yet seen the exact data because this comes from the automatic system. I believe it was felt across a wide area, in Crete as well as in Kasos and Karpathos, but we do not yet have more details. We are essentially waiting for the recordings to assess the overall situation.
It is near Cherso; it must have been strongly felt throughout Lasithi and the rest of Crete. At the moment, the exact magnitude and location are being calculated. At 5 kilometers depth, it is considered a shallow earthquake, but the detailed and precise data will be known shortly.”
Speaking from Crete, ERTnews correspondent Giorgos Lambrakis emphasized that there have been no reports of damage to the local fire services. However, there is a significant sequence of aftershocks, with magnitudes such as 3.8, 3.5, 3.2, and 3.6, while the focal depth of the main earthquake was 9.7 kilometers.
According to the Mayor of Sitia, Giorgos Zervakis, “the earthquake was strong and lasted quite a while. This caused concern among residents, who continue to feel tremors, likely aftershocks.”
Both the Mayor of Sitia and the Mayor of Ierapetra, Manolis Fragoulis—who have been in contact since early morning with all relevant authorities—urge citizens to remain calm, stressing that the phenomenon is being monitored. Based on inspections carried out so far, including by the Fire Service, there have been no reports of damage. However, up to this point, in the same area, following the 5.7 quake, five additional tremors have been recorded with magnitudes ranging from 3.5 to 3.8 on the Richter scale.
