A clear message that the Cypriot government will not engage in public debate on operational security matters was conveyed by President Christodoulides when asked about an arrest case linked to reports of terrorism and the possibility of a planned attack inside Cyprus.
The Cypriot President avoided commenting on the substance of the information, stating that “absolutely no public statement” can be made on issues relating to national security. Christodoulides’ remarks came as investigations by Cypriot authorities are ongoing and as the case has taken on a cross-border dimension, following the arrest in Crete of a 37-year-old Hamas member. Cypriot police have confirmed that they are in constant contact with Greek authorities.
Security is a top priority
Nikos Christodoulides said that all state services work daily to protect citizens, but that this is not a matter for public debate. As he stated, “the security of the country, security in all areas, is the highest priority.”
Nicosia is seeking to maintain a low profile in a case where the disclosure of details could compromise ongoing investigations.
The President added that “there are issues we deal with almost every day without them seeing the light of day,” suggesting that state agencies routinely handle security matters that are not publicly disclosed for obvious reasons.
A case with multiple connections
The case follows a series of reports and publications concerning individuals allegedly linked to Hamas networks and planned attacks against Israeli targets. Four suspects of Arab origin have been arrested in Cyprus, while investigations are also examining possible links to individuals abroad.
At the same time, Israeli prosecutors have referred to a person residing in Cyprus who allegedly played a role in planning activities involving individuals arrested in Israel. However, this information is being assessed by law enforcement and intelligence agencies and does not allow for public conclusions beyond official statements.
Information shared when necessary
When asked whether he is personally briefed on such cases, President Christodoulides replied that he is informed by the relevant ministers and services when necessary.
Nicosia is aware that Cyprus’ geographical position, its close relations with Israel, the presence of foreign nationals on the island, and wider regional tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean make the country a focus of increased attention for security services. This does not necessarily imply an imminent threat, but it does mean that information is treated seriously and handled in cooperation with foreign authorities.
