90% of refugees and illegal immigrants want to stay in Greece now

Tactics changed after EU-Turkey agreement

According to a report by newspaper ‘Eleftheros Typos’, 9 out of 10 refugees reaching the Greek islands are applying for asylum. The report claims that refugees have changed their tactics after the EU-Turkey agreement was signed and are no longer trying to move towards northern Europe immediately, but prefer to at least guarantee a spot in Greece for a long period until their asylum application is being processed. The agreement provides that refugees are allowed to stay in Greece as for as long as their applications are under review.  This places even more pressure on Greece, and especially the islands receiving illegal immigrants and refugees. The reception infrastructures on the eastern Aegean islands have a capacity to accommodate up to 6,000 people, with  nearly the majority of the 5,500 refugees and illegal immigrants having arrived there after March 20.
