Archaeologists recover Byzantine ships from the bottom of the Black Sea.

The relics of an era open up the history of the Black Sea

Newsroom October 27 11:25

A team of English archaeologists recovered over 40 ships that belong to the Ottoman and Byzantine era from the bottom of the Black Sea. The findings are in pristine condition due to the lack of oxygen.

According to the Daily Mail, the team of researchers used two remotely operated devices so as to obtain 3D imagery of the sites  and also to collect information concerning the Black Sea at the depth level of 1800m.

The goal of the operation is to use the data provided by the vessels in order to gain a better insight into the history of the Black Sea. Specifically the head of the archaeological team, Dr. John Adams suggested that finding the exact location of  where the ships went under will actually shed  new light concerning the history of that era and region. The research site spans the trajectories that linked Byzantium to other cities.
