A strong 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit the sparsely populated southeastern part of Taiwan today, the US Geological Survey (USGS) announced.
For its part, Taiwan’s meteorological service reported that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8.

A tsunami warning was issued by the US Tsunami Warning System following the earthquake. Taiwan authorities do not issue a tsunami warning for earthquakes below magnitude 7.
