Apotheosis for Alexis Tsipras outside SYRIZA’s offices

It is SYRIZA's moment and the party's supporters are celebrating a victory for the party and an end to austerity

Newsroom January 25 10:15

Main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras, the man of the moment, was given a hero’s welcome upon his arrival at the SYRIZA headquarters at Koumoundourou Street. He arrived with his partner and mother of his two sons, Peristera (Betty), amid cheers.

A huge stage has been set up at the Propylaia – the monumental entrance to the Acropolis rock – where Mr. Tsipras will give a speech.

Earlier, soon after the exit polls were announced, SYRIZA supporters began their first celebrations, and stated: “It is a historic victory for the Greek people, who have placed themselves against austerity, sending a strong message to Europe that could be a starting point for all of Europe. SYRIZA takes on the responsibility of creating a government of social salvation to implement the Thessaloniki program and negotiate with Europe.”

There was enthusiasm at the Koumoundourou Street offices from early on in the day, but there were burst of joy as soon as the exit polls were announced.

Mr. Tsipras’ speech will be a victory speech, however it still remains to be seen whether the party will have enough support to create a majority government.

The party has already pledged to stop austerity and take on a new course for Greece, one that puts the country at odds with their international creditors.

Mr. Tsipras is expected to call for unity and offer to work with all parties, especially those against austerity.

It is expected that he will reassure Greeks that a change of course away from the policies of the memorandum does not mean endangering Greece’s role in Europe.
