The fifth in a series of barrages of arrests were made by Turkish authorities early this morning as part of a crackdown on the jailed mayor of Constantinople Ekrem Imamoglu and other mayors of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

Arrest warrants have been issued by the Prosecutor’s Office of Constantinople against 47 people who are CHP officials in local government. Among the warrants are five involving mayors of regional municipalities, three in Constantinople (BuYuktskmehje, Gaziosmanpasa and Avtzilar) and two in Adana province (Sheyhan and Jehan). A former CHP deputy was also arrested.

Since very early this morning, police have been proceeding to execute the warrants, and by about 10:00 a.m., 30 people had already been arrested.

Following this development, the CHP committee in Constantinople are holding an extraordinary meeting.
