Russia wants Iran to continue its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said today.
Moscow’s statement comes a day after Iran’s parliament approved a bill to suspend the country’s cooperation with the IAEA/IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog, following 12 days of war with Israel during which Israeli and US strikes were carried out against Iranian nuclear facilities.
“The IAEA, which refused to condemn even the slightest attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, has sold out its international credibility, Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Galibaf said yesterday after the vote.
Moscow, which maintains strategic cooperation with Iran, has condemned the Israeli and US attacks and stressed that Tehran has the right to a peaceful nuclear energy program.
“We want cooperation between Iran and the IAEA to continue, we want everyone to respect Iran’s repeatedly expressed statement that this country has and will have no intention of acquiring nuclear weapons, Lavrov said at a press conference.
International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi said yesterday that the inspectors’ top priority is to return to Iran’s nuclear facilities to assess the impact of U.S. and Israeli strikes and to check Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium.
