The officer of the Hellenic Air Force who was arrested has admitted to spying for China, according to information from Proto Thema.

The individual is a 50-year-old Wing Commander, commanding a unit in Kavouri, who had access to critical NATO information because of his rank and position.

How he was discovered

He was identified several months ago after a foreign intelligence service alerted Greece. Once the Hellenic Intelligence Service (EYP) received the report about his activities, they placed the Wing Commander under surveillance.

The decision to intervene and arrest him today was made after authorities assessed that the information he was transmitting increasingly involved sensitive matters. The officer admitted to the charges and is also under investigation for other recent similar incidents.

How he operated

The officer reportedly “left traces” through a QR code he used to access critical files, which made it possible to track his activity and uncover that he was transferring highly sensitive information to Beijing.

His actions are considered criminal under the Military Penal Code, and, according to officials, all prescribed procedures will be followed.

Statement from the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (ΓΕΕΘΑ)

“On Thursday, February 5, 2026, in the early morning hours, the competent military authorities arrested a member of the Armed Forces. The arrest took place within a military facility, in coordination with other state services (in the presence of an authorized prosecutorial officer), following clear indications of criminal activity under the Military Penal Code. Specifically, the collection and transmission of secret military information to third parties, with the potential to harm national interests.”
