Mitsotakis to Tasoulas: Government imposes a cap on fuel and supermarket products (updated)

At the Presidential Palace, the Prime Minister met with Konstantinos Tasoulas – Announcements on curbing profiteering will be made at 14:00 by Hatzidakis, Theodorikakos, and Papastavrou

The meeting takes place within the framework of the Prime Minister’s regular monthly briefings to the President of the Republic.

The temporary measure aims to ease cost-of-living pressures amid rising fuel and grocery prices.

“We must ensure that this turmoil does not lead to profiteering,” Mitsotakis emphasized at the Presidential Mansion, during his routine meetings with the President. “We remain vigilant for any further effects of the crisis,” he reassured.

He also added, “Our country is a factor of geopolitical security in turbulent times,” said the Prime Minister, referring to Cyprus. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made a titanic effort to evacuate thousands of our compatriots who wish to return home, while at the same time, at all diplomatic levels, our country is making its own effort to ensure that the conflict does not spread to other regions,” he said, explaining that Greece supports Lebanon’s principles.

The Prime Minister, at the Presidential Mansion, outlined his intentions regarding the first economic measures to address the consequences of the war. At 14:00, the Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis and the Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou will make detailed announcements, following up on the meeting held on Monday evening.

On his part, Mr. Tasoulas described the situation created by the war as unpredictable. “Our country has the stability and prudence required in this period, acting with calm and determination. The Greek State, the government, and opposition parties must face this period of major challenges with the necessary prudence and composure.” He also highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to repatriate Greek citizens.

“The vigilance demonstrated by the State in protecting Cyprus must also be evident in combating profiteering. I am confident that the measures to be announced will ensure that those who might try to exploit the situation for excessive profit will understand that this is not the time to fill their pockets. The State fulfills its duty to its citizens, the Greek people, who welcomed the initiatives taken in Cyprus, and I believe they will also embrace the initiatives against profiteering.”

Mr. Tasoulas also mentioned the presence of Emmanuel Macron in Cyprus and the initiatives taken for the island. “Europe’s reflexes proved to be fast, immediate, and effective, and throughout this effort, our country played a leading role and is recognized for it by all,” he emphasized.
