Two days after the decision to remand in custody the three young men accused of leaving 19-year-old Myrto in a square in Argostoli, leading to her death, authorities continue to investigate the case in depth, which has caused widespread shock. At the same time, the family’s lawyer clarified that the doctors were present and at their posts at the hospital.
The lawyer for the 19-year-old’s family speaks of evidence suggesting the possible involvement of other individuals. Among them, the 66-year-old man is reportedly being examined, who, according to information, had communicated with Myrto on the fatal night and had sent her 220 euros.
According to the data so far, the man had exchanged messages with the young woman, although it has not been clarified how they met or why he proceeded to send her money.
At the same time, the family’s legal advisor, Mr. Drakouloggonas, points out that, based on recent events, there are indications of involvement by more individuals.
For his part, the 19-year-old’s father speaks of a network that allegedly attempted to exploit his daughter, stressing that he will fight for justice in her memory.
What was said about the doctors
Regarding Myrto’s hospitalization, the lawyer relayed information from her mother, confirming that medical staff were present at the hospital from the very first moment the incident occurred: “The mother confirmed to me that everyone was at their posts, doctors and staff, from the very first moment the incident arose,” he said to ERT.
It is noted that in a post, the Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, had described what happened in the final minutes before the minor died, after being abandoned by the three accused in a square in Argostoli.
“Shortly before 05:00, the EKAB ambulance arrived at the hospital with sirens. The hospital staff immediately realized the severity of the incident. The on-duty rural doctor was the first to respond, and in less than one and a half minutes the on-duty cardiologist was at the emergency department, and in less than seven minutes the on-duty anesthesiologist. All necessary efforts were made (CPR, intubation, administration of adrenaline and other medications), but unfortunately Myrto arrived at the hospital in her final breaths and it was not possible to save her.”
What the accused claimed
The three young men, who after lengthy testimonies were remanded in custody and are to be transferred to Korydallos prison, deny that they abandoned Myrto.
Footage from a hotel security camera records their movements: first appears the 22-year-old holding the 19-year-old’s jacket, followed by the 26-year-old weightlifter carrying her out of the premises, and lastly the 23-year-old. They then take her to a central square and call an ambulance.
“We were trying to help her, but she wasn’t coming to. Then I decided to call the ambulance and the other two told me they were afraid of getting into trouble, so they would take her downstairs and say they found her in the street. At some point the 26-year-old came back and told me an ambulance had taken her and everything was fine. I stayed behind to clean the room,” said the 23-year-old.
The common line of defense among the accused is that they did not abandon the girl and remained with her until the ambulance arrived.
On the other hand, friends and relatives describe Myrto as a girl with no health issues and no involvement with substances. “My friend had no health problems and never used drugs or alcohol,” said a friend.
Complaint about the hospital and reactions
At the same time, new dimensions are added to the case by complaints made by a person claiming to be a nurse, alleging that the 19-year-old did not receive timely medical assistance due to the absence of a doctor.
However, the evidence gathered so far suggests that the complaint may stem from a personal dispute. The Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, announced that legal action will be taken for defamation, noting that if it is proven to be a false complaint driven by personal motives, the person responsible will have no place in the National Health System.
Hospital staff reacted immediately and, according to reports, recognized the voice of the complainant as that of a doctor at the institution, who allegedly had a personal dispute with a colleague involved in the attempt to save the 19-year-old in the emergency department.
The investigation continues on all fronts, with authorities examining every aspect of the case.
