According to the Geodynamic Institute, a total of 51 earthquakes had been recorded by 7 p.m. on Friday, following the 5.7-magnitude quake that struck just before 6:30 a.m. off the coast of Crete.
The morning earthquake was centered in a marine area approximately 23 km southwest of Goudoura, Sitia. According to Sitia mayor George Zervakis, no damage has been reported; however, the ongoing seismic activity has caused disruption in the area.
“We are closely monitoring the development of the phenomenon,” said Lassithi Deputy Regional Governor Yannis Androulakis, stressing that the Civil Protection mechanism remains on heightened alert and urging citizens to remain calm.
