Police Scotland is investigating visits by Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell to the royal residence of Balmoral following information that has come to its attention.
Epstein visited Balmoral in 1999 with Maxwell after being invited by Andrew, who was then a prince.
A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed that inquiries were under way, while clarifying that they remained at a very early stage.
“All investigations are evidence-led, with the needs of victims and survivors at their heart. We never confirm details of ongoing investigations, and it would be inappropriate to comment further,” the spokesperson said.
Balmoral Castle has belonged to the British royal family since 1852, when the estate was acquired by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The residence is considered one of the royal family’s favourite retreats. Queen Elizabeth II died there in September 2022, aged 96.
