Albania blackmails the members of the ethnic Greek minority in Himara not to self-identify as Greeks

The Greek minority organization 'Omonoia' states: "Rama distributes property titles for the residences of Greeks of Himara - It is on a dangerous downhill path of societal division & dispersion of ethnic hatred"

Newsroom May 24 07:54

In a dangerous downhill path of petty political practices, societal division, and dispersion of ethnic hatred, the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama is found, according to representatives of the indigenous ethnic Greek national minority in the neighboring country.

In their statement, the ‘Democratic Union of the Greek National Minority – Omonoia’ even claims that the Albanian Prime Minister has gone beyond the limits. In his recent visit to Himara, he distributed some property titles for the residences of the city and urged the residents not to self-identify as Greeks because it is not in their interest (sic)!

In detail, the announcement of the Democratic Union of the Greek National Minority – Omonoia states:

‘The Prime Minister of Albania, Mr. Edi Rama, trapped in the deadlock for which he is solely responsible, continues the crescendo of practices involving the fragmentation of Himara’s society, manipulation of citizens, and ultimately disregarding the principles of the rule of law, equality, and fairness.

Today he returned to Himara under the delusion that the time for healing the consequences caused in the local community by the illegal imprisonment and detention of the elected Mayor of the area, Mr. Fredi Beleri, has passed.

He repeated one of the most tasteless shows of petty politics he is accustomed to, paving the way for the process of early elections he has initiated through decisions of controlled judicial bodies.

However, he went beyond the limits: Like a wandering peddler and not a head of state, he distributed some property titles for the residences of the citizens of Himara. Not for areas of significant economic value on the coast, which he reserves for the ‘strategic investors’ of the courtyard like he has done until today. With titles from the state, from the Cadastre system financed by the European Union, he attempts to conduct partisan politics. Furthermore, the presence of the party mechanism leaves no room for another interpretation. He did not refrain from attacking the President of KEAD, who represents the major opposition in the Municipality, overlooking that in this way he fosters a language of hatred and discord in the local community and by extension in the Hellenism. Practices that the communist regime applied in the region, classifying Greeks as ‘ours’ and ‘yours’. He revealed that assigning duties to the Regional Governor of Aulon to a person of Greek origin, tested in similar missions, aims at further political division manipulation of the local society. He coerced citizens of Greek origin not to self-identify as such because it is not in their interest.

The Prime Minister has been accused for many months but remains indifferent, having the delusion that he will ultimately subjugate the society of the citizens of Himara and will continue with practices of annexation of the area disregarding the interests of the residents.

In essence, he makes the way out of the labyrinth he is trapped in more difficult because he has lost his sobriety and composure.”
