Farmakonisi: They saved their kids from war but not from drowning (pics + vid)

Tragedy at sea for refugees fleeing from war

Heartbreaking images show terrified immigrants desperately swimming to shore after their overcrowded dinghy collapsed just 100 meters away from the Greek holiday island of Lesbos, while elsewhere 34 refugees drowned off Farmakonisi, 12 miles away from Turkey.

The death toll at Farmakonisi is the largest from a single accident in Greek waters since the refugee crisis began. Deaths include four babies, six boys and five girls.

68 people were picked up alive and a further 29 managed to swim to safety.

While the migrants were drowning, Greek caretaker Prime Minister Vasiliki Thanou defended Greece’s application of EU and international treaties while also taking into account that humanitarian factor.
