Greek statistics show thriving black market

ELSTAT points to black market and illegal activities as magifiers of public debt

The statistical authority of Greece, ELSTAT, published data on the black economy that shows that it magnifies public debt as a portion of the GDP.

The review is part of ELSTAT’s compliance to Eurostat’s regulations that require member states to revise national accounts at least every five years. ELSTAT is currently collecting data from public enterprises and other organizations as well as relevant studies to gage the level of illegal activities, “moonlighting” and other unregistered work to revise the GDP – taking 2000 as the base year.
