You are opening Pandora’s box and you will face the consequences, says PM Tsipras

He lashed out at main opposition, while thanking New Democracy and PASOK for giving him the chance to launch this debate

Newsroom March 29 06:11

The parliamentary debate on justice issues begun with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras lashing out at the opposition and accusing it of hypocrisy.

“A great many things, all together, will be said here today,” Mr. Tsipras said thanking New Democracy and PASOK for giving him the chance to launch this debate.

He also accused ND, acting on the pretext of a so-called revelation about a supposed government intervention in justice, of acting in close concert with some of the well-known media of corruption in order to create a hubbub and create impressions.

“This is not naivete but effrontery and arrogance…You will open Pandora’s box and you will face the consequences,” he said.

Mr. Tsipras referred to “notorious Papangelopoulos intervention” – relating to allegations that Alternate Minister for Corruption Dimitris Papangelopoulos had attempted to influence a prosecutor’s handling of an investigation into the businessman Andreas Vgenopoulos.

He said that a disciplinary inquiry was already underway regarding the handling of that case, which involved major financial interests.

He also stated that SYRIZA will table a proposal for an examining committee to carry out an investigation of loan agreements between banks, political parties and the “bankrupted media”, whose final conclusions will be issued by the end of May.

Mr. Tsipras stressed that the issue of shady loans given to political parties could not end “overnight” because the previous ND-PASOK coalition government had slipped through an amendment pardoning and giving immunity to all that gave them.

He also referred to the loans of New Democracy and PASOK saying “The debts of your party reach 210 million euros,” addressing to Kyriakos Mitsotakis, while addressing to PASOK he said “your debts reach 111 million euros based on 2013 data.
