Archbishop Anastasios of Albania is expected at Evangelismos Hospital, and is being transferred to Athens from Tirana by Air Force aircraft, which was carrying trained EKAB personnel for air evacuations. The aircraft took off from Tirana shortly after 18.30 and is expected in Elefsina in about an hour.
His Beatitude was admitted to a hospital in Tirana on December 30. At that time. Consequently, he contracted a virus, and his hospitalization was deemed necessary mainly for preventive measures, given his age (95 years) and deteriorating health which had worsened significantly. The virus had developed into an infection, and he reportedly had bleeding in his digestive system. Therefore, it was considered necessary to transfer him to Athens to Evaggelismos Hospital, where he will be treated in the Intensive Care Unit. Archbishop Anastasios was hospitalized in the past in the same hospital, in November 2020, when he contracted coronavirus. At that time, he was treated by Professor Anastasia Kotanidou and this is expected to happen now. Currently, his condition is stable.
Notably, Archbishop Anastasios is one of the most popular figures of Orthodoxy and established the Orthodox Church in Albania at the request of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
