The UK has imposed new sanctions on major Russian oil companies Gazprom, Neft, and Surgutneftegaz, the Foreign Office announced.
The measures, which include asset freezes and restrictions on transportation, come at the same time as new sanctions by the US Treasury targeting Russia’s energy sector.
“Oil revenues are the lifeline of Vladimir Putin’s war economy,” said UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy. “Targeting Russian oil companies will drain Russia’s war chest,” he added.
The UK and its Western allies have also targeted the so-called shadow fleet in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, stating that the vessels trade in illicit Russian oil that helps fund Putin’s war efforts.
