Preventive measures for the protection of Santorini’s cultural heritage – Ministry of Culture’s decisions

The Ministry of Culture has announced that the Cyclades Ephorate of Antiquities has implemented all necessary preventive measures to protect Santorini’s cultural heritage in response to the ongoing seismic activity on the island

Newsroom February 7 07:00

A high-level meeting was held on Thursday, February 6, under the leadership of Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, focusing on safeguarding the cultural assets of the Cyclades.

According to the Ministry’s statement, as soon as seismic activity was detected, the responsible archaeological authority followed standard protocols and took precautionary actions.

Key Measures Implemented:

  • At the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological Museum, exhibits have been relocated to lower shelves, and protective materials have been placed to prevent potential damage in case of further seismic events.
  • Special care has been taken for fragile items, such as glass display cases, large pottery vessels, and sculptures, to minimize any risk.
  • In the Akrotiri archaeological site, workshops and storage areas have been secured according to safety requirements.
  • Similar measures have been applied to other islands where seismic activity has been felt.

On Thursday morning, a Ministry of Culture delegation, led by Secretary General Giorgos Didaskalos, conducted on-site inspections of Santorini’s museums and archaeological sites as part of ongoing monitoring efforts. The inspections confirmed that, for now, both exhibits and infrastructure remain undamaged.
