The Epitaphios, adorned with flowers and fragrant scents, was placed at the center of the church, offering a sacred space for prayer and reflection for the faithful.
In an atmosphere of reverence and deep emotion, the Service of the Deposition was held on the morning of Good Friday at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens. A large crowd of worshippers gathered early at the church to witness the sacred ritual that reenacts the moment Christ’s Body is taken down from the Cross.
The Epitaphios, beautifully decorated with blossoms and aromas, was solemnly placed in the center of the church, becoming a place of devotion and contemplation. Hundreds of people of all ages came to venerate it — laying flowers, lighting candles, and offering prayers.
As night approaches, the veneration culminates with the Service of the Lamentations. A few hours later, crowds will form a procession for the carrying of the Epitaphios through the streets of central Athens. Holding lit candles, the faithful will follow the adorned Epitaphios, chanting hymns and deeply experiencing the sorrow and solemnity of Good Friday.
