The United States is working to bring into the country early next week the first group of white South Africans it has classified as refugees according to officials briefed on the plans.
The administration of the US president Donald Trump plans to send officials to Washington’s Dulles International Airport in Virginia for a ceremony to mark the arrival of the South Africans, who are part of the South African white minority, the NYT reported, citing a memo from the Department of Health and Human Services.
The White House and that department did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Trump issued an executive order on February 7th calling on the United States to resettle Afrikaans refugees, who are descendants of the early Dutch settlers, as they are “victims of unjust racial discrimination.”
