Moments of terror were experienced on Sunday afternoon, August 3, by bathers on the beach of Macarese, in the Lazio region, when a tornado took bystanders by surprise, “lifting” umbrellas into the air and causing panic.
According to reports, the weather suddenly deteriorated and a strong wind swept across the beach, tossing umbrellas and sunbeds. Beachgoers began running in panic to protect themselves while beach staff tried to restore order.

“The weather suddenly got worse and it started blowing very hard. Umbrellas were thrown into the air,” an employee at a beachfront shop in the area told Adnkronos agency. “It lasted a few minutes, but people were scared and ran for protection. I approached the lifeguards to help them close the umbrellas and get the bathers to safety. There was panic, but fortunately, no one was hurt. Shortly afterwards, everything returned to normal.”
Local authorities have not reported any injuries or property damage, and point out that this is a rare occurrence for the season and the region, which appears to be related to the extreme volatility of the weather in central Italy in recent days.
