A strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck shortly after 11 p.m. on Monday (local time) in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan.
According to preliminary measurements, the quake occurred off the eastern coast of Aomori, with a focal depth of 50 kilometers. A tsunami warning of up to three meters has been issued. Authorities have urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate immediately and move to higher ground.
