Greek Foreign Minister calls on Turkey to abandon ‘casus belli’ against Greece

Turkey has consistently and egregiously called on Greece to abandon its military defence on the Aegean islands while threatening it

Newsroom December 6 01:27

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias once again called on Turkey to withdraw the threat of war (casus belli) during the briefing to the members of the competent parliamentary committee of the Parliament.

The Foreign Minister stressed that the Greek government remains open to dialogue with Turkey in the framework of International and Maritime Law on a dispute concerning the continental shelf and the EEZ, but added that “a self-evident condition for the success of the dialogue is for Turkey to abandon the threat of war against Greece. Abandon the casus belli. Turkey is the only country in the world that, in complete violation of the UN Charter, threatens another country with war, even noting that the threat is made if the other country – Greece – exercises its legal right. This must be removed from the middle. It is not possible to accept the threat of war as a logic of coexistence. Turkey must realise that it is also in its own interest to withdraw the casus belli.”

Mr. Dendias underlined that UNCLOS has been ratified by the EU and elsewhere he said that “the Turkish government must prove at some point what it sometimes declares to its various interlocutors. That co-signs the dialogue in this context. Not a pretense for dialogue based on generalities.”
