A blue shark appeared in the shallows on a beach in the Ionian Islands.

This is the species Prionace glauca (BSH – Glaucous Shark or Blue Shark), which was found almost on the shore. According to the iSea Facebook page, the presence of Glaucous Shark should not cause panic.

However, the group cautioned against approaching any wild animal as it could cause aggressive or unfamiliar behaviours due to its own fear.

“The species is harmless to humans, but in any case, should be treated with respect and attention that is recommended for all our encounters with wildlife! If a shark is spotted, bathers should be kept away from the sea and in no case should pursue interaction with the animal! So we keep our distance and only if the animal does not seem to be able to return to the sea, then we only try to help by avoiding the head and gills, and trying not to make any abrupt movements that could injure the animal. We do not touch it with bare hands, we do not pull it hard from the tail and we do not drag it on the sand.”

In fact, it is pointed out that corresponding observations on the species are recorded throughout the Mediterranean. The Glaucous Shark or Blue Shark is an endangered species, but it is not protected.
