Postal vote: 202,556 voters will vote in the European elections

280% increase in the number of Greeks abroad compared to those who voted in the June 2023 national elections

280,000 people will vote in the elections of the European Parliament in 2023, compared to the number of people who voted in the elections in 2023.

For the first time in the history of Greek elections, 202,556 voters inside and outside Greece will participate by postal vote in the upcoming European elections.

The deadline for registration on the relevant electronic platform of the Ministry of Interior expired at midnight on Monday and according to the final data 153,282 voters within the territory and 49,274 Greeks with voting rights from 128 foreign countries registered.

It is recalled that the procedure concerns the European elections on June 9, while the Interior Ministry bill introducing the possibility of postal voting was passed only by the 158 MPs of the New Democracy party. However, the government’s intention is to extend postal voting to national elections.

According to individual statistics, the vast majority of voters outside the territory are located in European countries.

In detail, the registered voters are as follows:

– Europe – 41,680 (84.6%)
– North and Central America – 5,033 (10.2%)
– Asia – 1,017 (2.1%)
– Africa – 476 (1%)
– South America – 233 (0.5%)
– Oceania 835 (1.7%)

According to reports, the bulk of applications came from Germany, Britain, USA, Belgium and the Netherlands, while there were applications from American Samoa, Djibouti, Angola, Mozambique, Congo, Cambodia, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador and Zambia.

The age distribution of registrants is as follows:

– 17 – 30 years old – 34,147 (16.9%)
– 31 – 40 years old – 34,543 (17.1%)
– 41 – 50 years old – 38,904 (19.2%)
– 51 – 60 years old – 35,632 (17.6%)
– 61 – 70 years old – 27,172 (13.4%)
– Over 71 years old – 32,158 (15.9%)
