Matt Damon as Odysseus, Charlize Theron as Circe in Christopher Nolan’s new “Odyssey”

Christopher Nolan announces advanced technological approaches for epic "Odyssey" - Anne Hathaway to play Penelope

Newsroom January 10 11:29

Homer’s “Odyssey” has inspired numerous books and films over the years, with filmmakers turning to the timeless epic to make their own mark. But now, it’s become a new obsession. After “The Return,” the recent film by Umberto Pasolini starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, which focused on Odysseus’ return to his palace and Ithaca, Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film is set to retell the entire epic from the beginning.

This is expected to be Nolan’s most expensive production yet, and it will not only use the latest technological tools but will also recreate the epic in all its spectacular detail in a way never seen before. It will be the first time this story is presented in IMAX, and the production is backed by Universal Pictures with a truly top-tier team, including high-profile names in the starring roles.

Nolan’s Perfectionism and Impressive Cast

Although little is known so far, what is certain is that Nolan’s “Odyssey” will be the most stunning version of the myth to hit the big screen. This is largely thanks to Nolan’s reputation as a filmmaker who not only knows what it takes to create an epic, but also understands the intricacies of production, script selection, and ideal casting. Known for his perfectionism, Nolan recently triumphed at the Oscars with “Oppenheimer,” a modern anti-epic about America’s past. His meticulous attention to detail and dedication to realistic, well-executed storytelling set him apart from other filmmakers who’ve ventured into Homer’s world.

Nolan is known for producing films that center on persistent, heroic protagonists striving to achieve their ultimate goal, embarking on grand journeys through time and space—ranging from science fiction epics like “Inception” and “Interstellar” to the famous “Dark Knight” trilogy about Batman, and “Oppenheimer.”

The Odyssey on Film

The first film adaptation of “The Odyssey” was a silent movie by Giuseppe De Liguoro. A more recent adaptation, also by an Italian, was directed by Umberto Pasolini and released in cinemas, focusing on Odysseus’ return. Perhaps the most famous adaptation was the 1954 film “Odysseus” starring Kirk Douglas.

Universal Pictures has officially announced the new adaptation by Christopher Nolan on social media, highlighting that it will be an action-packed mythic epic filmed worldwide using the latest IMAX technology. The film, which brings Homer’s ancient epic to IMAX screens for the first time, will be released globally on July 17, 2026.

The stellar cast is already drawing attention: Matt Damon will play Odysseus, with Charlize Theron portraying Circe. In a teaser trailer released just before Christmas, Damon appears disheveled, with long hair and a beard, stranded on an island speculated to be Circe’s. Anne Hathaway will play Penelope, with the actress expressing her excitement for the role: “The best part is that Nolan didn’t care about all the toxic things people say about me online and gave me one of the most beautiful roles I’ve ever taken on in one of the best movies I’ve participated in so far,” she said.

Tom Holland, also thrilled, shared his enthusiasm on social media, expressing that receiving the call from Nolan about the role of Telemachus was “the call of a lifetime.”

Nolan’s Vision

Christopher Nolan is determined to take full advantage of technological advancements to create fantastical creatures and faithfully depict Odysseus’ adventures on land and at sea. The film will faithfully explore what Homer envisioned for Odysseus, who, as the epic’s opening states, “traveled to many cities and learned how men think and what they have in their minds.” Nolan’s version will focus on Odysseus’ long journey, emphasizing his determination to return home to Ithaca.

The goal is not just to deliver an epic adventure, but to remain true to Homer’s timeless themes. Nolan is committed to crafting a film that captures the realism of Homer’s world while keeping the mythic and fantastical elements intact. Fans of Homer’s “Odyssey” can expect thrilling portrayals of the monsters, the Sirens, and other mythical creatures that challenge Odysseus along his journey.
