Discord between ND and PASOK on cooperations and parties in support of the drachma: Retorts by Androulakis, Geroulanos, and Katrinis

PASOK’s Stance on Cooperation Sparks Political Debate

Nikos Androulakis and other PASOK leaders have firmly ruled out any possibility of collaboration with the ruling New Democracy (ND) party, instead expressing openness to alliances with opposition forces like SYRIZA and the New Left. This position has triggered heated exchanges between PASOK and the government, intensifying the political atmosphere.

Before submitting his independent proposal for the Presidency of the Republic, Androulakis had consistently stated that PASOK would not pursue governmental cooperation with ND. He outlined two scenarios if no party achieves self-reliance in the upcoming elections: ND could seek alliances with right-wing parties, or PASOK could form a coalition with opposition groups.

Speaking to Action 24, PASOK leader Pavlos Geroulanos reinforced this perspective, emphasizing the party’s commitment to progressive alliances. Asked whether figures like Kasselakis, Varoufakis, Konstantopoulou, and Famellos could fit into such a coalition, he remarked:

“Those who embrace a progressive and reformist agenda aligned with PASOK’s character are welcome. Not everyone needs to agree blindly, but they must contribute to building progressive proposals for society.”

Similarly, Michalis Katrinis, in an interview with SKAI, declared:

“PASOK is ready to form a government of progressive forces if we secure the first mandate in the next elections. This includes SYRIZA and the New Left.”

New Democracy’s Response

New Democracy reacted sharply, accusing PASOK of aligning with “parties of the drachma,” referencing political entities associated with Greece’s economic turmoil and resistance to European integration. In a statement, ND said:

“PASOK’s compass now clearly points to alliances with the parties of the drachma. Mr. Geroulanos confirmed this narrative by suggesting figures like Varoufakis and Konstantopoulou could fit into PASOK’s plans. The sole objective of such an alliance is to overthrow the current government.”

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis also criticized PASOK, stating that Androulakis’ statements reveal a preference for alliances with SYRIZA and other left-wing groups:

“By voting for PASOK, you’re effectively endorsing a coalition with SYRIZA, including figures from their disastrous 2015–2019 government, or with the KKE and New Left, whose policies undermine Greece’s European trajectory.”

PASOK’s Retort

PASOK dismissed ND’s accusations, highlighting the ruling party’s role in Greece’s economic challenges:

Mitsotakis speaks about elections in 2027 (and means it) without internal party tensions, new ND secretary “locked in”

“New Democracy not only led the country to the brink of bankruptcy but, along with others it now criticizes, misled the Greek people with false promises during a critical time. PASOK consistently kept Greece in the eurozone, prioritizing national stability over political cost.”

The statement further stressed PASOK’s commitment to ending austerity, reducing inequalities, and restoring institutional respect:

“Every vote for PASOK ensures political change and a path away from policies that have eroded the rule of law and deepened social divides.”
