Netherlands: Burglars blow up museum and steal 450 BC gold helmet and rings

Cotofenesti's helmet is considered a national treasure of Romania - The burglary occurred at the Drents Museum in Assen

The moment burglars stormed the Drents museum in the Netherlands’ Assen, was recorded by a security camera.

The video shows some of the attackers planting explosives which they detonate to enter the building.

The burglars’ target was four ancient gold objects, part of an exhibition from Romania.

According to the BBC, the loot of the burglars was three Dacian spiral bracelets and the centerpiece of the exhibition, the impressively decorated golden helmet of Cotophenesti, which dates back to about 450 BC.

Museum director Drends said staff were “intensely shocked” by the break-in, which he said was the largest incident in the museum’s 170-year history.

Police, in addition to CCTV footage, are also investigating a burning vehicle found on a nearby road.

No arrests have been made, but authorities suspect several people were involved and Interpol assistance has been requested.

For its part, Romania’s culture ministry has promised to take all possible measures to recover the stolen items.

All four stolen objects have enormous cultural significance for Romania, with Cotofenesti’s helmet considered a national treasure.
