Angelos’ funeral in Athens – Doctors pay tribute to the 3-year-old who suffered but gave life to others

The last act of the drama in the torture and abuse that shocked the country will have its final farewell in Athens - The body will be transported by ship

Newsroom February 4 05:30

The latest act of drama in the 3-year-old Angelos abuse case that shocked the nation is expected to be written in Athens.

The little boy, after suffering torture at the hands of his mother and stepfather, breathed his last while his organs were donated by his grandmother’s decision.

The 3-year-old’s body is expected to be transferred tonight by ferry to Athens where the funeral funeral will take place, according to cretalive.gr.

Gifts of life from 3-year-old Angelos

Angelos’ heart is expected to be transplanted into a 3-year-old child in Berlin, Germany. The administration of the University Hospital of Heraklion stated the donation from 3-year-old Angelos. It states:

“On Sunday, January 26, 2025, a 3-year-old child with severe craniocerebral injuries was hospitalized at the University General Hospital of Heraklion (Pagni). Despite the efforts of the hospital’s staff and the Intensive Care Unit for Children, where he was hospitalized, the child died.

The child’s family, after being informed of the brain death, requested the donation of his organs. Immediately, the entire hospital, in cooperation with the Heraklion Prosecutor’s Office, mobilized in this direction.

On Monday, February 3, the Hellenic Transplantation Organization (EOM) was informed and the necessary procedures for the evaluation and reception of the organs offered were immediately initiated.

At 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, surgery began, led by a surgical team from Berlin, Germany, for the reception of the heart transplant. At the same time, a team from the Kidney Transplant Unit of the Athens Laikos Hospital undertook the collection of the kidneys, which will be given to patients on the waiting list of the National Transplant Registry.

All procedures were completed by following all legal and medical protocols, in collaboration with the NOM.

Finally, it is noted that in the complex process of organ donation, which requires the close and coordinated cooperation of the hospital staff, PAGNI remained committed to the goal of life donation and transplantation. We hope that this act of solidarity will set an example for all hospitals, healthcare providers and our fellow citizens to follow.

The Hospital Management expresses its sincere condolences to the relatives of the child, with the hope that even in such tragic circumstances, the donation and the thought of saving other people’s lives, through little Angelos, will ease their pain, even if only slightly.

The surgeons’ bow to Angelo

Earlier today, touching moments unfolded at the Heraklion hospital. Before the procedure to remove the organs of little Angelos began, the doctors held a minute’s silence in memory of the little boy who so unjustly passed away.

“One minute silence” by the surgical teams, as a minimum tribute to the little Angelo, who gave life to our sick fellow human beings. Warm thanks to the Administration, the Children’s ICU, and all the staff of the P.G.H. Heraklion, as well as to the Prosecutor’s Office of Heraklion, for the excellent cooperation. Endless respect to the grandmother of the little boy for the decision to donate. We hope that this act will ease her unspeakable pain,” the Hellenic Transplantation Organization said in a post.
