Weather: Brief relief today, a new, stronger heatwave is coming from Sunday

Temperatures up to 37°C in Athens, winds at 4–5 Beaufort and locally up to 6 in the capital – Which areas face a very high fire risk

The weather across the country will be slightly improved on Wednesday, with main characteristics being high temperatures and northern winds.

Temperatures will slightly drop in the north, with a maximum of 36°C, but will still reach 37°C and locally 38°C on the mainland. The meltemi winds will continue to blow, although with less intensity compared to yesterday.

However, according to meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafilias, a new strong heatwave is expected from Sunday:

“An initial estimate puts temperatures at 43°C in heat-sensitive areas.”

On Tuesday, high temperatures were recorded across the country, with the highest being in Skala Messinias (41.7°C).

According to the Fire Risk Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, for today, July 16, a very high fire risk (category 4) is expected for the following areas:

  • Region of Attica
  • Region of Central Greece (Regional Unit of Euboea)
  • Region of the Peloponnese (Regional Units of Corinthia, Argolis)
  • Region of the North Aegean (Regional Units of Lesbos, Chios)

Furthermore, the fire meteorological risk map by meteo.gr shows no significant changes from yesterday.
Attica, eastern Central Greece, Aegean islands, and Crete remain in the very high or extreme risk category.

GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

Generally clear weather, with temporary clouds in the north and during midday–afternoon hours across other mainland regions, with a chance of local showers in the north, mainly mountainous areas.
Winds will blow from northern directions at 3 to 5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 Beaufort in eastern mainland and the Aegean.
Temperatures will slightly drop in the north. They will reach:

  • 34–36°C in Macedonia, Thrace, the Ionian, Eastern Aegean islands, Dodecanese, and southern Crete
  • 36–37°C and locally 38°C in the rest of the mainland
  • 31–33°C in the remaining island regions

MACEDONIA, THRACE

Weather: Generally clear. During midday–afternoon, clouds will develop with local showers, mainly in the mountainous parts of Macedonia.
Winds: From northern directions 3–4 Beaufort, up to 5 along the coast, gradually weakening before noon.
Temperature: From 18 to 35–36°C. In Western Macedonia, maximums 2–4 degrees lower.

IONIAN ISLANDS, EPIRUS, WESTERN CENTRAL GREECE, WESTERN PELOPONNESE

Weather: Generally clear. Local clouds will develop in midday–afternoon hours, with local showers in the mountainous areas of Epirus.
Winds: Northern 3–4 Beaufort, locally 5 in the Ionian.
Temperature: From 19 to 36–37°C, locally up to 38°C. Ionian islands up to 34°C. In inland Epirus, 2–4 degrees lower.

EASTERN CENTRAL GREECE, EUBOEA, EASTERN PELOPONNESE

Weather: Generally clear. Local clouds will develop in mountainous areas in midday–afternoon.
Winds: Northern 3–5 Beaufort, up to 6 in the eastern parts.
Temperature: From 22 to 36–37°C, locally 38°C.

CYCLADES, CRETE

Weather: Clear.
Winds: North–northwesterly 4–6 Beaufort.
Temperature: From 23 to 32–33°C. In southern Crete, locally up to 35°C.

EASTERN AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANESE

Weather: Clear.
Winds: Northern 3–4 Beaufort, in the north 5, locally up to 6.
Temperature: From 24 to 34–35°C.

Weather: Generally clear with some temporary clouds in the midday–afternoon hours, mainly in the surrounding mountains.
Winds: Northwest 3–4 Beaufort, gradually weakening before noon.
Temperature: From 23 to 35°C.
