It looks like autumn is well and truly upon us as of today with meteorologists warning of intense weather. According to EMY, the deterioration of weather is expected from Saturday evening until Sunday evening, mainly in the Ionian Sea (area of Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Lefkada), Aitoloakarnania and the western Peloponnese (Achaia, Ilia, Messinia).
For “extremely dangerous weather”, warns Klearchos Marousakis. As noted in a post by the OPEN meteorologist “from the midday – afternoon hours of Saturday, an organized low barometric pressure will develop towards the central – southern Ionian Sea, which will be significantly strengthened by the warm seas with which it is expected to interact. This means that in many areas west of the Pindos mountain range, several hours-long feedback storms will develop which are capable of producing extremely high rainfall.”
Star meteorologist and former director of EMY, Thodoris Kolydas, in a post referred to the change in weather, warning of heavy rains “in western Greece from Saturday afternoon and Sunday, mainly in the prefectures of Messinia, Ilia and Achaia. Caution in western Sterea as well as in Zakynthos Kefalonia. Athens is not significantly affected – perhaps not at all. The fact is that from Sunday onwards the weather will be autumnal. Temperatures will drop by about 5 degrees and the feeling of cold will be more intense as strong northerly winds will blow“.
For his part, Alpha meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafillas, in a post about the bad weather approaching the country from the west, refers to “about 100 tons of water per acre“. As he stresses, “great care will be needed from Sunday 28/9 at dawn until the afternoon of the same day in Kefalonia, Ithaca, Zakynthos, Aitoloakarnania, Achaia and Ilia, because the bad weather is persistent with feedback storms for several hours in these areas, resulting in several tons of water.”
“I hope most of the water will fall into the sea because 100mm (maybe more) of water is the amount that falls in 2-3 months in these areas,” he concludes.
