Japan: Lawmakers call on government to take action on UFOs

Two former Defense Ministers behind the initiative – Their argument is that UFOs could pose a danger to the country's security

Newsroom May 30 10:30

Two former Defense Ministers of Japan are part of a group of lawmakers planning to form a cross-party parliamentary committee to urge the government to study unidentified flying objects (UFOs), which could potentially pose a threat to national security.

According to Reuters, this is stated in the declaration by the founding members of the committee, which will focus its research on UFOs.

Opposition lawmaker Yoshiharu Asakawa cited last year’s findings from the US government’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), which was created to handle such issues, noting that Japan lacks a similar agency.

According to the U.S. office AARO’s 2023 report, “There have been numerous reports of sightings of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) in the skies over Japan,” emphasized Japanese lawmaker Asakawa.

Lawmaker Asakawa explained his reasoning at a meeting of the group’s founders, which includes former Defense Ministers Yasukazu Hamada and Shigeru Ishiba.

“We will urge our government to create a special agency to improve Japan’s capabilities in collecting and analyzing information on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and to deepen cooperation with the United States on the issue,” emphasized Japanese lawmaker Asakawa.

Reuters also reports that former Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada will lead the group of lawmakers, which is expected to be established on June 6, and former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, son of former Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, will serve as secretary-general, according to the office of opposition lawmaker Asakawa.
