Keir Starmer: Rules Out Possibility of the UK’s Rejoining the European Union

British PM Keir Starmer, currently in Germany, met with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin today and ruled out the possibility of the UK rejoining the European Union

Newsroom August 28 03:01

Starmer, who is on a two-day visit to Europe, stated his intention to “reconfigure” the UK’s relationship with the EU.

“This does not mean overturning Brexit or rejoining the single market or customs union, but it does mean a closer relationship on many fronts,” Starmer explained at a press conference following his talks with Scholz.

Scholz and Starmer also announced from Berlin a new unprecedented bilateral treaty, which aims to renegotiate the UK’s relations with the rest of the EU. Both leaders expressed hope that the treaty will be signed by the end of the year.

This treaty is described by Starmer as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity” to strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries across various sectors, including trade, science, and technology. This visit to Berlin marks Starmer’s first bilateral visit.

Olaf Scholz welcomed Starmer’s goal of improving the UK’s relations with the EU, noting that the UK is essential for addressing major issues facing Europe.

“I am delighted that Keir Starmer has announced his intention to pursue a new beginning in relations with the EU,” Scholz said during a joint press conference, praising the initiative and expressing his willingness to respond to “the hand extended” by London.

Starmer also stated that the UK does not plan to negotiate with the EU on a youth mobility program that would allow young Europeans to work in the UK without a visa and vice versa.

“We have no plans for a youth mobility program, but we do have plans for a closer relationship between us and the EU,” Starmer said.

The British Prime Minister also extended his condolences for the fatal knife attacks that occurred on Friday in the German city of Solingen.
