A campaign to get all motorcyclists to wear helmets was released today by the Department of Health.
The video features Health Minister Adonis Georgiades, who describes how the helmet saved him when he had a car accident years ago.
“Young bookseller riding a motorbike. Near the Ministry of Health, a car jumps out of the stop, inexperienced driver I hit the front brake. For when we found ourselves on the asphalt, one side me, the other side the motorbike, the other side the books, I didn’t even understand,” Adonis Georgiades said initially.
“But I was wearing a helmet. I got up and went on with my life,” he stressed.
He continues: “Every year hundreds of our fellow human beings, mostly young people, end up here (at the CAT). Many lose their lives, and too many live the rest of their lives with severe disabilities because they were not wearing a helmet.”
“I am truly appalled by what I learn and see every day in our hospitals, from mostly young children, losing their lives because they were not wearing a helmet! Agrinio, Kissamos, Chania, Volos, etc. are some of the cities that are mourning their children, who have gone like this in the last few days only. It is a pity! Hundreds of people die every year, families are destroyed, and we lose our future for something so very simple! I called the Federation of Petrol Dealers on Friday and we agreed, and I thank them, to extend to the whole country the great initiative of their colleague who announced that he would not provide fuel to motorcyclists who go to the petrol station without a helmet.
We have agreed on a joint campaign and he will legislate on this and I thank him.
Today I present a spot we shot with my partners the day before yesterday to raise awareness to as many people as we can and we will see what other actions we can think of.
Do as much as you can, every action we take on this issue counts”
