Twenty-five years after its original release, Jonathan Franzen’s bestselling novel The Corrections has finally found its way to television, with producers even securing the author’s involvement in the creation of the series.

As announced by the content platform Netflix, the leading role—Enid Lambert, the family’s matriarch—will be played by Meryl Streep. No other casting names have been confirmed so far.

The book tells the story of a dysfunctional family whose three adult children hesitate to return to their childhood home to celebrate Christmas together. Each has their own reasons, and as the story unfolds, the deeper causes of their reluctance—and many details about their hidden lives—are revealed.

The series will be directed by Emmy Award winner Cord Jefferson (American Fiction, Watchmen), while the screenplay will be written by Franzen himself—perhaps explaining the delay of the much-anticipated second installment of his upcoming trilogy, Crossroads.

This marks the second attempt to adapt the novel for television. The first, in 2011 at HBO, failed despite a completed pilot directed by Noah Baumbach. As it turns out, however, the delay may have been for the best, as Streep is expected to elevate the role to new heights.

At present, the award-winning actress is on a promotional tour for the film The Devil Wears Prada 2, alongside her co-star Anne Hathaway.
