Afternoon atmospheric instability will persist across mainland Greece, particularly in the central and northern regions. However, according to protothema.gr meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafyllias, the gradual strengthening of northerly winds over the weekend will reduce the unsettled conditions and bring a noticeable drop in temperatures.
More specifically, today, Friday, 3 July 2026, showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop across mainland Greece from midday onwards, particularly in Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly and Epirus, mainly over mountainous areas.
The weather may be accompanied locally by squally winds and hail.
Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 37°C across mainland Greece and 32°C in the Cyclades, Crete and the Dodecanese. Winds will blow from northwesterly directions. In the Ionian Sea, they will reach up to Force 5 on the Beaufort scale, while in the south-eastern Aegean they may locally strengthen to Force 6.
In Attica, periods of cloud are expected, with the possibility of a brief shower after midday in the northern part of the regional unit. Winds will be light to moderate, while temperatures will range between 23°C and 33°C.
In Thessaloniki, a brief spell of rain or a shower is forecast from midday onwards. Winds over the Thermaic Gulf will remain light, while temperatures are expected to reach 34°C.
Weather outlook for the coming days
On Saturday, unsettled weather will continue during the warmest hours of the day across mainland Greece, while the gradual strengthening of northerly winds will begin to bring temperatures down.
By Sunday, showers and thunderstorms will become significantly more limited and will come to an end across most parts of the country. At the same time, temperatures are expected to fall further.
Finally, according to the latest forecast data, no heatwave is expected in Greece during the first half of July.
