It was agreed that a delegation, led by Evangelos Gkountoufas, General Director of Forests and Forest Environment, will visit Kythera early next week. The team will carry out on-site inspections of the affected areas to plan essential anti-erosion and flood-prevention projects. They will also explore the option of artificial reforestation using a variety of plant species to ensure more resilient vegetation in the future.
To support the local economy and boost tourism, the government will launch an aid program modeled on the initiatives successfully implemented in Northern Evia, Thessaly, and the Evros region. Since the current summer season is already in full swing, the new program will be rolled out next year and will run over an extended period, including the summer months.
The meeting also covered plans for restoring and upgrading the island’s infrastructure. The Prime Minister assured that the state will remain firmly committed to supporting Kythera and its residents.
Also present at the meeting were:
- Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios
- Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Kostas Katsafados
- Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Thanasis Kontogeorgis
- Evangelos Gkountoufas, Head of the General Directorate of Forests and Forest Environment
